Drug utilization review (DUR) pharmacist-reviewed comparison of a patient’s exisiting treatment to a new treatment
Elixir medicinal liquid that has been sweetened to give it a pleasant taste
Filter needle used to catch contaminants (such as glass from a vial) as medication is drawn into syringe
Flow ratethe calculation of how many drops per minute a medication will flow through an IV
Formulary list of prescription drugs covered by a patient’s prescription drug insurance plan
HEPA filter used in a laminar flow hood to remove micron particles to create sterile work environment
IV piggy back placed on top of the main infusion bag of an IV line. When the medication in the piggy back is needed, the main bag can be easily shut off and restarted again.
Laminar flow hood redirects air flow to prevent contamination during the creation of sterile products. A laminar flow hood can be vertical or horizontal. Hoods should be cleaned using 70% or greater isopropyl alcohol. The laminar flow hood should be turned on at least thirty minutes prior to use.
